In his book “The Bass Handbook of Leadership, Theory, Research, and Managerial Applications,” Bernard M. Bass with Ruth Bass (Fourth Edition, New York, Free Press, 2008) shares his research and insights about leadership. Here I highlight some of his more interesting and helpful observations and conclusions.

It (leadership) is influence beyond what is due to formal procedures, rules, and regulations. Thus managers are leaders only when they take the opportunity to exert influence over activities beyond what has been prescribed as a requirement of their role.
